Bacardi Silver Lemonade

(St. Louis, MO)

Amanda: 1

I strongly dislike fruit/malted drinks. That said, this is one I could actually drink.  It’s crisp, clean and you don’t feel like you are being assaulted by fruit. Kudos to Bacardi for making a non-plucky summertime lemonade.  Here’s a fun idea:  get a six pack, 7-Up and frozen limeade. Mix and freeze… adult slushie time!!

I’m not too crazy about wine cooler/malt beverages as a whole but I think this one would be great over ice on a hot summer day. The lemonade flavor is just right, not too tart and not too sweet.

This is a total flashback to sneaking Mom’s alcoholic beverages for the family fridge. Flavored beer is one thing but weak lemonade with malt liquor is crossing the line for me. Your best bet would be to mix Sprite, fresh lemonade, and vodka and drink it instead. It would be much more tasty and won’t make your stomach hurt after one drink.

Okay, Must keep an open mind here, right? Sweet frou-frou drinks can't all be despicable and stomach-churning, can they? This fizzy soft-drink-like "malt beverage" has a lemonade-meets-artificial corn syrup taste that feels heavy and weird. Nice for a sip, but over the course of a whole bottle, it's overbearingly sweet and manages to completely obliterate all my taste buds.

No, thanks.

I am not a fan of wine coolers or premium malt beverages or anything in those kinds of categories. I like Bacardi. I like lemonade but didn’t really care for this drink. I would not put it in the same class as beer. It had a decent citrus flavor and was OK.  It was hard to drink after drinking the previous 3 beers.  It did have a refreshing taste to it. This would be a beverage to drink after mowing the lawn and put in a glass with some ice.

Schlafly Summer Lager

(St. Louis, MO)

Amanda: 4

The toasted malt really sets this apart from the rest of its class. It finishes very clean. It’s also “bottled with love.” What else could you want?

Sharon: 3

It pours clear yellow with very little head, which is odd because it has a lot of carbonation. There’s hardly any smell. It has a weak beginning, middle and end. But that wouldn’t be such a bad thing on a hot summer day.

Nick: 2.5

Not anything special here. It does include elements that make an excellent summer beer. It is smooth and light but falls short on flavor. There isn’t even a subtle flavor it just tastes diluted. In Schlafly’s defense they are not known for producing good lagers or any other light beer.

Todd: 3.5

A light, pale lager, this toasty-flavored beer has a nicely-balanced malt/hops combination. I sense a slight citrus zing almost. A good and mellow German-style lager that should please just about anyone, from mainstream consumers to craft beer afficionados. Absolutely no problem here.

Jabez: 4.5

This is a nice gold colored beer with great head. It had a nice malty taste. This is a good thirst quenching summer beer. It is light, crisp and refreshing. A slice of lemon would accent this beer properly.

Goose Island Summertime

(Chicago, IL)

Amanda: 2

What we have here is your typical Kolsch style beer. What makes it unique from others?  Its wheat wielding wallop!  Twenty-three minutes later and I’m still burping… not recommended for a first date.

Sharon: 4

The color is medium yellow and has a slight floral smell. It has a bold flavor with a clean crisp finish. I would drink this year round; too bad it’s a seasonal.

Nick: 4.5

What an outstanding first taste. This beer is the culmination of every aspect that makes an excellent summer beer. It is fresh, smooth, and moderately hoppy. The hops are very distinct but the taste doesn’t linger and become too bitter in the aftertaste. This is a solid summer beer.

Todd: 4

Nice. This one's a golden kolsch (German lager) with a smooth and malty taste at first, and a pleasantly hoppy follow-through. One of the better Goose Islands I've had. A smooth and refreshing beer with a complex flavor profile. Quite a treat!

Jabez: 4

This poured a hazy yellow and was similar to the Schlafly. It has great carbonation and had a sweet malty taste with mild citrus smell. It wasn’t as light and crisp as the Schlafly but a pretty good summer time beer.

Flying Dog Kerberos Tripel

(Denver, CO)

Amanda: 1

This beer is brewed for the “God of the barstool.” Boasting 8.5% alcohol/volume, this is an in-your-face ale that is hard for a weak palette to withstand. With an almost burnt malt taste, it is not by favorite dark ale.

Sharon: 2

Wow! Alcohol content is 8.5%!  After popping the cap the foam started to overflow and I didn’t shake it. Medium amber color, slightly cloudy. You can smell the alcohol and it over powers the flavor of the beer which I think would be good if I could taste it. I think I’d like the beer a lot better with lower alcohol content.

Todd: 4

Flying Dog seldom disappoints. This Belgian-style Tripel Ale is a murky gold/amber with a bold and zesty citrus/coriander/spice taste and a dry finish. It's 8.5%, so expect a kick. Kerberos Tripel is full of rich, full-bodied taste, and is certainly not for beginners. Solid any way you look at it.

Jabez: 4

It poured nice creamy amber but didn’t foam up much. The carbonation was pretty good almost a little light on the bubbles. It had a fruity flavor to it and a little spicy. It almost had a peppery finish to this beer. This is a very solid beer and I am always a fan of higher alcohol contents 8.5%.

Kasteel Rouge

(Belgium)

Nick: 4

The first taste is bold and flavorful but not over the top. The color is more similar to a red wine than a beer. It has such a substantial taste and strong smell but it is surprisingly smooth. It might be a little too rich for mass consumption but this ale is well balanced and decadent.

Todd: 4

An aroma of rich cherries and maybe some woodiness, very reminiscent of a fine wine, but minus the sulfites. With almost no head upon first pour, this Belgian kriek is sweet and strong (8% ABV), but not at all overbearing. Very nice for a fruit-infused brew. Kasteel's Rouge is well-balanced, and a fine beer to sip and enjoy. Tasty and unique!
